Wedge Anchor Questions

Q: What size bit do I use to drill hole for wedge anchors?
A: Anchor size is hole size.

Q: How do I remove the wedge anchor for the concrete?
A: Concrete anchors are designed not to come out of the concrete. The anchor can be cut off. The wedge anchor is designed so that it does not need the bottom of the hole to properly set. When installing the anchor, drill the hole deeper so that the anchor can be hammered into the hole till it is flush with surface.

Q: How deep does the wedge anchor need to be embedded into the concrete?
A: Each diameter of wedge anchor has a minimum embedment, which can be found on the (wedge anchor technical page).

Q: How close together can I put the wedge anchors?
A: The industry standard is ten (10) anchor diameters.

Q: How close to an unsupported edge can I put the wedge anchors?
A: The industry standard is five (5) anchor diameters.

Q: How important is it to clean out the hole before inserting the wedge anchor?
A: Very important. The hole must be cleaned by using air to blow out the dust and/or a wire brush to get out all the loose dust in the hole. Cleaning the hole will minimize slippage after the wedge anchor is set.

Q: How do I figure out the length of the wedge anchor that I need?
A: Add the thickness of the material to be fastened plus the minimum embedment for the diameter of anchor being used, plus the nut and washer.

Q: Can I use the wedge anchor for fastening into red brick?
A: No, the wedge anchor is designed for use in solid concrete only. The sleeve anchor is designed for use in brick, block and concrete.

Q: What type of steel is the wedge anchor made from?
A: The wedge anchor can be made from AISIC12L14, 303,304 and 316 stainless steel.

Q: What are wedge anchors plated with?
A: Standard wedge anchors are plated with a zinc plating, but also are Hot-dipped galvanized.

Q: What is the letter on the top of the wedge anchor for?
A: The letter is a length identification system. For example: If the anchor has a letter “D” that means that the length of the anchor is from 3” up to but not including 3-1/2” long. This is used for inspecting, because once the total length of the anchor is known it can be determined how deep the anchor is embedded in the concrete.
